Emergency Dentistry: All you need to know

Emergency dentistry focuses on the immediate care and treatment of serious dental issues like bleeding, severe infections, or cracked or knocked-out teeth. If you require emergency dentistry services in Springfield, Oregon, Dr. Torgeson at Mountain Stream Dental is always available to provide the required dental treatments and procedures that can ensure your long-term dental health.

When Is an Oral Problem a Dental Emergency?

Any trauma to the mouth that can cause laceration of the gums and soft tissues, bleeding, dislodged, or damaged teeth is considered a dental emergency. Broken dental restorations, such as braces or bridges, can also be considered a dental emergency if they cause pain or significant discomfort.

What Are the Different Types of Dental Emergencies and What Can You Do?

A dental emergency can happen at any time, and if it does, you should get emergency dental care immediately, especially if there is bleeding.

Knocked-Out Teeth

If your teeth become dislodged after an accident, you should immediately schedule an appointment with a dental office that provides emergency dentistry services. It is easier for the dentist to save the tooth if treatment is initiated immediately.

Meanwhile, follow these tips:

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown not the root
  • Rinse it with water to remove any debris from the tooth
  • Keep the tooth in salt water, a milk container, or keep it between your cheek and gums

Soft Tissue Lacerations

The tongue, gums, lips, cheeks, and palate are examples of soft tissues in the mouth. Damage to these tissues may be a dental emergency if it results in bleeding or infection. If this happens:

  • Rinse your mouth with salt water
  • Using a gauze to stop the bleeding or apply a teabag
  • A cold compress or applying an ice pack to your cheek can also help relieve pain

Chipped and Broken Teeth

If the tooth fracture goes to the root or there is acute dental discomfort, broken and chipped teeth are a dental emergency. To save the tooth:

  • Gather and conserve any teeth fragments that may be present
  • Rinse any broken pieces with warm water
  • If there is bleeding, use a gauze pad
  • Apply a cool compress to the face, lip, or mouth to reduce swelling and pain.
