For Missing Back Teeth, Here’s Why You Need Dental Implants

When it comes to replacing missing teeth, it’s natural to put a greater emphasis on the more visible ones. After all, no one wants to show an asymmetrical smile. There is no better method for fulfilling this desire than dental implants. However, they have a greater necessity than just providing a way to improve your smile aesthetics. If you’re missing any number of back teeth, here’s why it’s a must to replace them.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium rod that mimics the natural function of a tooth root by being surgically attached to the jawbone. It is then fortified through a process called osseointegration, in which the existing bone creates a webbing of new cells around the fixture.

After the jawbone and gums have sufficiently healed, an abutment is added, which is also made from titanium. Acting as an anchor, it then allows a final restoration to be attached to fully restore the tooth.

As previously mentioned, there is usually a greater motivation to replace a tooth that is visible, but it’s equally important to receive an implant for a tooth located in the back of your mouth.

What Happens When There is Prolonged Tooth Loss?

Your teeth rely on a shared network of tension to maintain their position. So if even one is missing for too long, the following problems can arise:

  • Tipping –When the teeth next to a missing tooth begin to lean in the direction of the open space, it is referred to as tipping.
  • Migration – The prolonged absence of a tooth can also create a problem with the opposing tooth, causing it to erupt and unseat from the gums, which is referred to as migration.
  • Rotation – Another issue that can unfold is for the remaining teeth to rotate as they continue shifting due to the missing tension. This may require dental braces to correct.

The above shifts can also lead to occlusion (bite) problems and the possibility of a gum infection from exposure to bacteria and food particles.

Why Dental Implants are Your Best Option

When it comes to replacing your missing teeth, there is no procedure more effective than the insertion of dental implants. That’s because in addition to providing a firm foundation and preventing your other teeth from moving, they also offset the bone degeneration that can occur due to the absence of tension at the jawbone level.

To reap these benefits, though, it’s imperative to be proactive and seek care from your implant dentist. The first step is to reach out today to schedule your initial visit.

With your new dental implants, you’ll be able to get your life back on track while also upgrading your oral health for years to come!
