When Was the Last Time You Cleaned Your Toothbrush Holder?

Question: What do you think the dirtiest surface in your home is? For many, the answer would be their toilet. However, recent studies have found that it actually ends up being one of the cleanest objects because it is washed regularly. You may be surprised to learn that one of the biggest culprits of bacteria is your toothbrush holder! Considering the current pandemic, it is more important now than ever to implement extensive sanitation measures while in public and at home. With this in mind, read on for three of the dirtiest objects in your house (and how to keep them clean!).

#1. Toothbrush Holder

Are you ready for a shocking statistic? According to a public health organization report in 2011, 27% of toothbrush holders tested positive for coliform bacteria (i.e., Salmonella, E. coli, etc.). Yikes! Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that you switch it out regularly. A great place to start is by purchasing a new one every six to twelve months.

#2. Toothbrush

Your toothbrush is a damp object that comes into contact with plaque, saliva, and food debris on a daily basis, which makes it a breeding ground for bacteria. To prevent the germs from continually being exposed to your mouth, the American Dental Association recommends purchasing a new toothbrush every three to four months (or sooner if you were recently sick). Plus, you should disinfect it daily by submerging it in hot water or mouthwash after each use.

#3. Your Bathroom Towels

Typically, people clean their bathroom towels every week since they are only used after washing your hands. However, study after study shows that the average person does not wash their hands thoroughly, so it can quickly become soiled. Plus, a damp towel is an ideal environment for bacteria, which can transfer back to your hands after you’ve cleaned them, making the process virtually useless. So, it is important to wash your towels at least twice a week or opt for a disposable alternative.

To ensure that your hands (and your home!) remain clean and safe, make sure to disinfect and replace the above items frequently. That way, you can have peace of mind knowing you are doing your part to keep your immune system strong and your oral health in pristine condition.
