Dental Checkups and Teeth Cleanings

Mouth open and being examined with mirror

In order to keep the teeth as healthy and clean as they can be, patients of all ages should come in for at least 2 checkups and cleanings per year. Why, you might ask? Because, frankly, brushing and flossing every day simply isn’t enough to prevent EVERY possible dental issue your teeth can develop.

For a dental cleaning, one of our skilled hygienists will use specialized tools to clear away built up plaque and tartar from your teeth and gum line. They’ll especially target those areas you can’t reach at home with your brush and floss. Then, Dr. Torgeson will perform a thorough oral exam where he’ll look for the signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and many other potential issues. By coming in routinely, we’ll often be able to stop most dental issues before they even start. Plus, you’ll just love how fresh and clean your teeth will feel after you come to see us!

Dental Sealants

Wouldn’t it be great to have just a little bit of extra protection against tooth decay? That’s exactly what dental sealants provide. They’re ideal for children who are still learning to brush their teeth and adults who are prone to getting cavities. For this, we’ll apply a clear, thin layer of a plastic-based substance to your teeth to protect them from bacteria and plaque. Most of the time, we only need to use them on the back teeth because they have so many hard to clean surfaces.

Oral Cancer Screening

Once every hour, a person in the US loses their life to oral cancer. This is tragic because the disease is very treatable, but most of the time, it doesn’t get diagnosed until it is quite advanced. To prevent this from ever happening to you, we’ll always perform an oral cancer screening during your regular checkup. Dr. Torgeson will examine your gums, tongue, cheeks, and throat for any signs of the disease, and if he finds anything, he can advise you on what to do next.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is nature’s gift to your smile! It is a naturally occurring mineral that actually strengthens your teeth against tooth decay and cavities. This is why you’ll see it so often in toothpastes and public water sources. We’ll simply apply a topical paste with a highly concentrated fluoride solution, and that’s it! It only takes a few minutes, and it will make your teeth much more resilient to plaque and bacteria.

TMJ Therapy

Do you have a stiff or sore jaw? It could likely stem from a strained or misaligned temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This refers to the set of hinges that connects your jaw to your head, and like any other joint in the body, it can suffer from problems. This can cause a variety of dental and overall health issues, but fortunately, we’re able to both diagnose and treat TMJ dysfunction right here in our office. We’ll always check it as part of your normal oral exam.

Nightguards for Bruxism

Man inserting a clear nightguard

Bruxism is a very common condition where a person clenches their jaw and grinds their teeth while they sleep. Over time, it can actually do severe damage to the teeth, even causing them to break! Luckily, we have a very simple solution for preventing this, and it involves something called a nightguard. It is a small, custom-made mouthpiece that a patient would just wear to bed, and it helps provide a protective barrier between the teeth.

Do you or your children like to play sports? If so, you should make sure everyone’s smile is protected, because some of the most common sports injuries are actually dental injuries! Mouthguards provide an extra layer of cushion that can shield the teeth and gums from potential impacts. Rather than getting an awkward and ill-fitting mouthguard from the store, we can give you a completely custom-made one. It’ll be much more comfortable AND do a better job of taking care of your smile.
