Professional Teeth WhiteningFor Brighter Smiles
If you’ve tried numerous over the counter teeth whitening strips, gels, pastes, and mouthwashes, you’re in good company. The majority of patients who visit Mountain Stream Dental interested in teeth whitening have already tried to brighten their smiles at home. Unfortunately, store bought teeth whitening products are not typically effective. Before you waste time and money trying to brighten your smile with one of the countless over the counter teeth whitening products that line the shelves of your local pharmacy, call our Springfield team to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation. We’ll review your smile, outline your treatment options, and help you find a teeth whitening solution the will deliver the results you want.
What are the Causes of Teeth Discoloration?
Teeth become discolored for a wide variety of reasons, including:
- Consuming dark colored foods and beverages (anything that would stain a white shirt will stain your teeth)
- Aging and tooth wear reveals the yellow dentin layer below the enamel
- Fluorosis caused by over consumption of fluoride creates white spots on teeth
- Tetracyline medications taken during dental development can lead to dark colored stains on teeth
What is the Fastest Way to Brighten My Smile?
At Mountain Stream Dental, we offer both in-office and take-home teeth whitening plans. No treatment is right for every patient, but if you want to brighten your smile quickly, in-office teeth whitening may be the way to go. This process is simple. First, we isolate your teeth and protect your soft tissue. Then, we apply your whitening gel. About every twenty minutes we’ll check your progress and reapply as necessary. Most patients achieve their desired results after about an hour. Unfortunately, some patients do experience dental sensitivity following in-office teeth whitening. For these patients and those who want to brighten their smiles more gradually, take-home teeth whitening kits may be a better option.
Is a Professional Home Whitening Kit the Same as Store Bought Whitening?
Many patients think that all take-home teeth whitening kits are the same whether they buy them in a pharmacy or from the dentist. However, professional whitening kits are not at all like those you’ll find in stores. Store bought whitening kits use very very low doses of active whitening agents. Because these products are applied to teeth outside the supervision of a professional, they do not contain enough whitening agent to damage soft tissue. Unfortunately, this also means they don’t contain enough whitening agent to whiten teeth in most cases. Additionally, store bought whiteners use one size fits all application trays. This allows whitening gel to seep out onto your gums and into your mouth, and it gives neutralizing saliva access to the gel. That means your whitening product is only active for a few seconds.
Professional take-home whitening kits are customized to your needs. You’ll receive professional doses of active whitening agent. Additionally, the custom crafted application trays keep the gel on your teeth where it belongs, and they prevent saliva from neutralizing the whitening agent. With about two weeks of short, daily applications, you will achieve your desired teeth whitening results.
